Where in the world is.......???

Wow, two months have gone by with no word. It is easy to become invisible sometimes. Family issues arise that one is not prepared for, but must deal with nonetheless. Things at work, things at home....before you know it, two months or more have passed.

I am also locked out of this website at my work, and without a computer at home, has made communicating with the outside world rather difficult. I am locked out of my favorite blogs: Curious Sofa, A Feathered Nest, Cathy Penton Designs, and Elizabeth House....just to name a few. I highly suggest taking a look at Elizabeth Maxson's latest entry. She has just lived through a very scary ordeal, but one that will no doubt make her so, so strong. I am such a softy....cried through the whole read.

So what have I learned during my two-month hiatus? That family is so precious. That new family members that we weren't expecting can have such a positive influence. That the only person we have control over is ourselves. That people have to be left alone to live their own lives and suffer their own consequences, even though we (or I) wish to fix it for them. Some of these are tough lessons for me, but I'm learning.

I hope to be back on my blog soon with more interesting information and pictures from projects I am finishing....Dottie's beautiful new kitchen, powder room, and a new niche turned computer cabinet (soon to be finished) and Denise's most beautiful and elegant master bathroom. I am very proud of both of these projects. Finishing touches to be added still, but the majority of it is finished. Hopefully, I will have a few new projects coming up in the new year.

I truly wish that my blogging friends have had the most blessed of holidays. It was a very different holiday for me this year as my mother and grandmother moved a year ago and this was my first Christmas without them nearby. My son was also away. So it was quiet for us, but we made it special by spending some good times with other family and friends. And as for my mom.....well, I am writing this from her house in Georgia. I just couldn't stay away, I guess.

Wishing you all the most precious of life's experiences and blessings in 2008!!

Musings

Thank you for your lovely comments regarding my new, my one and only, precious little grandson. I will be visiting him again tomorrow and am looking forward to covering him in kisses.
*****
It's interesting that I have my list of blogs that I take a look at daily and have totally neglected my own. Somewhere in my mind today, I thought, hey, what about your own blog?? So here I am.
*****
It's a rainy day here in South Florida today. I couldn't help but wish this rain could be transported to California to give all some relief. It is another reminder of just how little control we truly have over so many things. What I have been hearing though, is an incredible perseverance. The human resolve is incredibly strong. God truly made us into wonderfully strong creatures. I don't think we even begin to tap into what we are really capable of being.
*****
I have had this urge to challenge myself lately. I think it is because of this line of thought. I know He challenges my inner strength.....sometimes daily. When I make it over a hill that I thought I couldn't climb (and I mean emotionally), I just say, "WOW! You are incredible Lord. Please don't give up on me!" So I guess now I think, well if I can do it emotionally, I bet I can do it physically. This line of thought is forming.....ideas are coming to mind.....I haven't followed through yet. The bud of this flower is just starting to open. I'm going to do something!!! I just don't know what, yet. More on this to follow.
*****

This is the book I have been reading for the last couple of days. I will finish it today. I'm enjoying it and recommend it. It is a memoir really, but I am gaining insight from this woman's journey. And of course, I am loving what I am learning about horses. I love them and would love to own one some day. I'm wondering if at 44 I am too old to learn to ride. Did anyone just catch that? Could this be the challenge I've been searching for? Hmmmmm.......
*****
I have a busy weekend ahead of me and am really hoping to fit in a visit to the Lincoln Road Antique Collectible Market in Miami. It's about an hours drive away.....not bad. I was surprised to learn about this in Country Home magazine and to find out it is basically in my own back yard. It is now the season for this show that runs every other Sunday. How exciting! I'm not going down there with any preconceived ideas, but am hoping to bring back a few treasures. I'll blog some pictures next week.
*****
Have an enjoyable weekend. Find your own peace and waller in it!!

Warm wishes. Sweet dreams.

Safe and Sound....

Here is my first little grandson, James Lee Keller. He made his arrival into this world at 11 p.m., Wednesday, October 3. He weighed in at 8 pounds, 7 ounces and is 21 inches long. He is almost as big as his daddy was. He is absolutely the most precious things I've ever laid eyes on and wish I could carry him around all day long!! I have to keep reminding myself that I am his "grandmother" not his mother. This is really great!!! He is our precious little angel and I just love him to pieces. He better get used to being kissed on, because I plan to due a lot of it!!!

He is such a little blessing to come into our lives. I just can't get enough!!

Warm wishes...... Sweet "lullabye" dreams.....

Office Halloween

I know I've said it before, but we truly have to imagine the seasons down here. So.....at my "real" job (the one that pays the bills and insurance), I played around with my window sill. I have a tiny little office at the end of the hall on the third floor with a great window and deep sill. I lovingly grow some great plants and even an orchid there. My orchid has bloomed twice since I placed it there over a year ago. Amazing!! Today I brought the camera to work to play around with it a little bit.

The window, itself, did not allow for an overall picture due to the glare. This little upper corner shows just a piece of an old window frame taken from a 1920's house, sans the glass, but lots of chippy paint in about 3 colors. The iron piece was on the top of an old gate (I think). It is very heavy, but I think it is very cool. I was glad to find a place for it.
*****
These two birds are from two pictures that hang on another wall. You know my love of birds. I couldn't resist these two prints that I picked up at SunFest a few years ago and had framed. They will be with me wherever I go.

From the wise old (and dearly departed) Ralph Waldo Emerson...."Make the most of yourself for that is all there is of you."

"September"

From the poem "September" by Helen Hunt Jackson.....

"The goldenrod is yellow;
The corn is turning brown;
The trees in apple orchards
With fruit are bending down."

I hear so many say that this approaching fall season is their favorite time of the year. I will include myself in that group. The words above do not express what fall feels like here in Blazingly Hot Sunny South Florida, however, but I like to read those words and conjure up the image just the same. The picture below was taken by my sister-in-law a couple of years ago when we were touring the Great Smoky Mountains with her daughter and my other niece. What a great time it was. We were actually there running away from hurricanes that year. What we found was a great change.....of scenery, of atmosphere, of thoughts in general.

This picture has become my screen saver. If I look very closely at it, I can hear the water running and feel the coolness one can only experience here. I know if you've ever been there, you know exactly what I mean.

I've been longing for this place of late. Maybe it is because of the peace and calm that overcomes me in this park. Life is interesting. I say that to myself many times a day. We never know what the next day or even minute will bring. We can't control it....only roll with it. What comes our way is not always what we wish for or expect. Life has been interesting to me lately. I learned many years ago that the control of it all lies within the hands of Our Father, who I keep saying must think I'm a very strong person....that I can handle a lot. If He believes in me that way, I need to also. It's the giving it up that makes us stronger, don't you think? That sounds like an oxymoron, but it's true. So.......like the water that endlessly runs in the mountains above, I will continue to have faith that life will run over some rocks on some days and flow smoothly on others.

Wishing you all......warm wishes and sweet dreams,

Carol

Time Flying By....

My, how time does fly. I didn't realize it had been so long since last I blogged. We've been busy, busy, busy.... My husband's son and wife are in the process of moving into their new home and we've been assisting with updates. We are working on procuring a new home ourselves whose projects will be all-consuming for a long time. However, we love putting our mark/style/touch to our space. We should know for sure in a few weeks. It's such a strange time in the housing market these days, don't you think?

My design projects are still in full swing. One is coming to a close and one is just revving up. I will post pictures soon. I'm so pleased with how things are coming along.

Well, this is just a quick note today, as I'm off and running again. Thanks for checking in. I'd love to hear from you! What are you all up to? Is it starting to cool off anywhere in the country yet??? It's still sweltering down here.....

Warm wishes. Sweet dream.

I Just Meet the Nicest People!!

Well, I'm back in the swing after having taken a little get-away weekend to visit family in Georgia. I have family in Smyrna and my husband's family is down in Forsyth. Guess what town is smack-dab in between? That would be McDonough, home to The Plum Tree Antiques. I have a link to their store's blog under "Favorite Places to Visit." I could not pass up the opportunity to stop in to see one of the places I love to visit online and to meet Dawn. I had a wonderful time and was so proud to walk in and say hi, and to tell her I have her link on my little blog. She was precious, as was her store. Take a look at some of the pictures.

I love this picture. It's so charming. I'm on the serious look-out for a bike like this to add to my own garden. It looks like the same bike I learned to ride on so many moons ago. Such memories....scraped knees and all.

I enjoyed so much talking "shop" with Dawn. She and I both commented on the wonder of the kinship and network this blog thing has become for so many women-run businesses. It is great. And I just can't say enough for how sweet she is. Truly, Southern Hospitality abounds at The Plum Tree. It is worth the trip for sure. Here are some more pics....

I can only imagine what her place must look like come the Fall. I will have to visit again. I know we all were wishing for some Fall-like weather as it was a scorcher!!

I left Dawn and The Plum Tree feeling so wonderfully full and rich in the warmth of new friendship. Thank you, Dawn, for making us all feel so welcome. Your store is truly a treasure that I will visit many times over.

And one more little mention here -- Thank You! I have received some very nice comments from people I am only just now meeting and from those who have visited past shows. Your words are very heart-felt ,and I appreciate you and your comments. Sometimes I think these blogs become public diaries of sorts and we don't realize who might read our inner most thoughts. To have others take the time to send well wishes....well, I am truly touched and say thank you again.

So for now....I wish you....

Warm wishes. Sweet dreams.

Lessons Learned

I am just coming up for air in this very busy life I have created for myself these days. The Ft. Lauderdale show has come and gone, my two design projects are in full swing, and we are planning a quick get-away weekend in Georgia beginning tomorrow.
*****
I was very proud of how my booth turned out. As you can guess, it is a lot of work to pack up items, only to unpack them at the show, then take it all down in a day or so. My husband and son are troopers. What would I do without them? I don't travel lightly. This show included two very large china cabinets. They looked great, but, WOW!!
*****
*****
**********
I really felt like I had some great things to offer collectors of vintage......both old and new. I had many, many compliments. However, I learned a few valuable lessons last weekend. The first one: Know Your Market. I do know my market, they just weren't shopping in Fort Lauderdale. Actually, as one customer said, "You just don't find this stuff down here." She was pleased to see it, but was in the minority. My second lesson: Do not do shows in HOT, HOT South Florida during the summer. Most of my clients have gone north and next summer I will too.
*****
So yes, sales were much less than expected, but so it goes in the world of retail. Every show is not going to be a success. I was dissappointed, but not defeated. Like I said earlier, I was (and am) very proud of what I brought to the party. I will continue to persevere and look for the perfect item to bring forward in my own way. I will research the demographics of the next show a little more thoroughly and carry on!
*****
Please enjoy a few more pictures. Everything was beautiful!!! Thanks to all my vendors for providing me with the upmost in quality. I will continue to search out the right venue so I can do your products proud. And I will continue finding just the right piece of furniture that I can add the perfect "A Bird in Hand" touch to.
*****

*****
I appreciated seeing a few of my old friends who came by just to see me. That means the world to me!! I will continue to keep you posted of my happenings. I will most likely be in West Palm Beach again in November, but will let you know for sure very soon. Meanwhile, I will be happy to ship or deliver any items you see here that you may be interested in. I am considering a private show for invited guests sometime between now and November. If that develops, you'll be the first to know!!!
*****
In my next post, I will share some pictures of the O'Rourke master bathroom that is coming together beautifully!
*****
Until then, I wish you.....
Warm wishes. Sweet dreams.

Keep Those Shipments Coming!!!

I have been steadily receiving shipments for the August 4 & 5 show at the War Memorial Auditorium in Ft. Lauderdale. I'm anxious to share some pictures with you. Keep in mind, please, that I am trying to get familiar with my husband's digital camera and have not gotten the lighting down, among other things. I think I prefer natural light to artificial, however, it was late and I wanted to get something going.........so........here goes.......
*****
This picture and the next are just a sampling of the lovely charms from Cathy Penton Designs. She has truly outdone herself this time. My photography is not doing them justice, but I will keep working at it.
*****
The second picture shows a couple of offerings for Halloween....a holiday not even celebrated in Australia (did you know that??), but she made two adorable charms to help us celebrate just the same. I think they turned out great. Flanking those two charms is a card from Barbara Schriber. Her cards and other offerings never disappoint.
I am pleased to say both these items (charms and cards) sold very well at the last show, so I'm excited to be bringing more to you.
*****
My calico kitty, Gracie, would like to present some incredible items from Secret Leaves. Their offerings surpassed even my wildest expectations. Sharon and Ann.....you are both quite talented and I am very proud to show your work to the masses.
*****
What you see here are two photo albums (on top shelf) the old fashioned way. The covers are actual covers from vintage books. Pictures are to be applied via corner tabs. I will have some of those available also.
*****

Also included here are incredibly unique "Take Cover" journals. They are also made from old book covers with blank pages for all your secret, and not so secret, thoughts. You'll also find other assorted journals, mini notebooks, note cards, and gift enclosures.

Now, do you see that small book in the center. That is truly the cream of the crop. It is called a "Scrap Journal." It is a small book of old pages of all sorts. And I do mean old. A few pages show a date of 1941. It is SO COOL. They are one of a kind in every detail. I will admit, I didn't "get it" at first. When I read the description, I couldn't picture it, but let me tell you......it's gorgeous. My husband and I truly enjoyed turning each page for the next discovery. There are places for your own thoughts throughout as well. Here are two other close-ups of this little beauty.

*****
Please join me in August for an up close & personal. I really think you will love these items.
*****
By the way, the mustard colored table in the background was quite a find. It is solid mahogany under that paint and I am getting ready to make the big reveal in time for the show. I will keep a bit of the color and maybe add some other touches, but I have high hopes for this piece that, when seen from the side, actually has a bit of an Asian flare. I'll include pictures when it's done.
*****
I also received my shipment from These Flowers, This Moon. These are beautiful, handmade jewelry items made from vintage findings and often times, genuine stones. What I think is so interesting is that the artist, Kelly McGreal, has designed the most unique tags for her work. On each one is a Haiku poem indicative of the piece displayed. Take a look below.
*****
These are one of my favorite pair of earrings. They are called Honeycomb Earrings. They have a brass honeycomb combined with a citrine on a long chain behind it that makes it look like
a drop of honey dripping from the comb. Two little bees finish it off. I am wearing my pair today and LOVE them.
*****
To the right is the Charm of the Sea bracelet and Sea Salt earrings....very appropriate for these here parts..... I expect them to be very popular. I really love the way they look with my beach findings and star fish.
*****
I think that is it for now. Enough already, right??? Anyway, I hope you have enjoyed these pictures and that it has wetted your appetite enough to join me in Ft. Lauderdale. Of course, pre-sales are always available on anything you see and so much more. Please let me know.....
*****
For now I wish you......
Warm wishes.....Sweet dreams.....

I've Been Tagged!!!

Wow!! I am always so surprised when I hear from someone from somewhere out there that has visited my humble little blog. I have been tagged by Deena from Sweet Annee. She has a lovely blog. You can sure tell she is in the Midwest. Her woods are so different from ours. We really don't have much in the way of woods actually. Anyway, please check her out.

Here are 8 Random Things about me:

1. I was a "Lancerette" in high school.(drill team)

2. I played the violin from 4th grade to 8th grade and wished I had never given it up.

3. I could easily become a recluse (but think I would miss people after a while).

4. I have always wanted to live on a large piece of property....multiple acres.

5. I love the ocean more than lakes. I think I will always have to live where the ocean is within a few hours drive time, even though I rarely go in the water.

6. My husband is truly my best friend. I would miss him terribly if I became a recluse.

7. Together, my husband and I have four children (he has 3 and I have 1) and we have 5 grandchildren with one more on the way.

8. I have a major desire to become a major yoga follower, although I do not take yoga or do yoga at home. What does that say about me??? I love what I believe it could do for my body, but have not made the commitment.

Well....there you have it. Some things that some may know about me and then again, maybe they don't. I won't tag anyone else right now, as I really don't feel I know enough other bloggers. The blogs I read on a regular basis have all been tagged recently. When I find a new one, I will pass on my tag and say "You're It!!" Thanks all for reading.

Warm wishes....Sweet dreams....
Carol

P.S. Aren't the shells above beautiful? I ordered them from LunaGirl.com. It's a great site. I thought I was getting clipart, but got this sheet instead. Oh well. I still think they are beautiful. I'll stir the creative juices so I can put them to good use.

New Favorites...

I have just added two new "Favorite Places to Visit." I wish I could tell you from where they come, however, I don't speak/read German, Danish, Finnish, etc. I really don't know where they originate, but the pictures are INCREDIBLE!! I found it kind of fun to try to pick out a word here or there and I find it interesting how English is interspersed throughout. Anyway...enjoy the view!!!
*****
The first one is called Blomsterverkstad. It looks like three women have a business of making wreaths and other beautiful creations. Check out all the old posts also. Great pictures!! This picture is from their site.

*****

The second is: Min Lilla Veranda. Here is a little picture from (her?) blog. Maybe this woman is a photographer or stylist. She puts some beautiful things together.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

SHOW TIME!!

My next show is on the near horizon. For some reason, I found myself dragging my feet a bit. I tend to get in over my head at times, but it feels good to start directing my every waking hour to this next project.
*****
Another part of my little business is decorating. I am currently working on two fairly large projects (one a master bathroom renovation and the other a kitchen [and other rooms]). I will share some pictures as the projects start coming together. I have been very blessed to have made connections with some great people. My clients are truly my friends. I guess that is when you know it's going to work.
*****
Anyway, back to the show prep..... I will be at the War Memorial Auditorium on August 4 and 5 for the Ft. Lauderdale Antiques and Collector Fair. I am really looking forward to this show as it is kind of a cozy atmosphere with about 60 vendors.....much smaller than the WPB shows, but just as interesting. The Fair opens on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The $5 entrance fee is good for the entire weekend. Not bad....
*****
I am really excited to be offering some new items. The orders are in. I'll just be sweating the arrival like always. It seems to work out though. I'm still in the hunt for some cool old stuff. I have one really neat secretary top that is sitting on an old iron stand that I keep debating upon keeping for myself. I think that defeats the purpose though, right? It is truly one of the most interesting pieces I have seen in a long time. I'm sure it will be with me at the show. I'm going to tweak it a bit with my own custom look and will share some pictures prior to the show.
*****
Well, back to work for me. I'll be back soon with more news.......

Liberty and Justice for All....

This is coming to you a day early as I will be away from my computer tomorrow celebrating my freedom. I am sure I am not the only person who reflects over the last six or so years and thinks, "my, how times have changed." Our safe cocoon was shaken and we came together as a great nation. It is interesting how common place it is now to know we have to pack differently when we travel by air and we might have our car checked a time or two before we even get in. I am proud to say that we follow those directions quietly and humbly as we know what could happen, and we're thankful for those who are looking for the "what ifs." It's okay with me.....look all you want. I want to keep enjoying my freedom.
*****
I pray you all enjoy the freedom of a day off, time with friends and family, good food, good times, and fantastic fireworks!!
*****
Raise your flag in honor of those who will not be with family tomorrow, but who will be fighting for us so we may. May God bless you all and keep you safe.

Rainy Days and Thursdays

It's a rainy day here in South Florida today. We need it so badly, I really cannot complain. I know my garden and garden friends are enjoying it immensely.
*****
Last weekend we had the sprinkler on and it was creating a mist that a Cardinal couple was enjoying so much it made me think they hadn't seen water in awhile. I am sorry I did not have my camera at the ready to take pictures to share. They sat on the edge of the green fencing we have to put around the beds to keep Jasper (our German Shorthair Pointer) from stampeding through everything, and fluttered their wings in pure enjoyment for about 5 minutes. The way the sun peeked through the branches and such, it was incredible. You almost couldn't look away.
*****
Like when we were in Camden, Maine....if you've ever been to the Camden Deli and sat in the back overlooking the harbor with the mallard ducks floating just below the window, perhaps you have found, like me, that you really can't take your eyes off them. It's like watching another part of the world that carries on while we are carrying on in our own. When you think of it, there really is a lot going on that we don't really notice. When I actually do notice it, it stops me in my tracks for a few minutes. It's a good reprieve from the day, really.

Please enjoy the day with Warm Wishes and Sweet Dreams........Carol

As promised, here are pictures from our not-so-secret garden.

Dreams and Such

"Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become. Your vision is the promise of what you shall at last unveil." This quote by John Ruskin has so much truth in it. I have had the dream of decorating and having my own store for so long that it appears to actually be coming true! It is true that I have been decorating for a few years now, but I am always surprised that when I've accomplished something that I ask myself, "Where did you get that idea from?" It is truly a gift from God. It has taken me a long time to find my gifts, but that is indeed what it is. I have had the opportunity to work with some wonderful people who have become my friends as well. I will show pics soon of a bathroom renovation I am working on. I am happy to call this client a dear friend as well.

As far as the new part of the business goes, I am pleased and excited to be among greatness. I met with Denise Cote of Our Cottage Garden.com this past week and it was like we have led parallel lives of sorts. She has an absolutley beautiful home and garden in Historic Flamingo Park and has surrounded herself with loveliness. Check out her website and eBay offerings.

My point here really is that everyone I have met has welcomed me into the fold. There is a camaraderie of sorts that I am very proud to be a part of. I have much to learn. Everyone I have met has put their own spin on their business to make it their own. I am still working on finding my own niche, but it is there, I know it. I'll keep dreaming and so shall I become!

Isn't this picture beautiful? It is a Blue Wave Hydrangea, as seen in Country Living Magazine. I have this thing for blue and purple flowers, and love to mix them with anything white, pink and yellow. That is pretty much what my garden looks like.....not this flower, unfortunately, as it does not grow in Zone 10, but the color scheme is there. I will take pictures of our gardens as it is at its peak right now. Sometimes the summer heat is too hard on the flowers and they start fading. Hurricanes don't help either, but we were lucky last year. I hope we will be spared this year as well. We've started to finally get some of our summer rain, so everything is coming back to life....in the garden that is. With the rain comes the humidity and I, on the other hand, start to wilt. I'm a Fall and Winter kind of gal, but tolerate it, I do.

Have a wonderful day and week all.

Warm (and I do mean "warm") wishes. Sweet dreams.

My First Show - Part II

With a wave of my magic wand, my first post will reappear! OR.....it is here again because I had to retype it. I vote for the second one.
***** ***** *****

Well, all the work was worth it. I was very nervous that this little show would end up looking like a garage sale. I spent weeks looking at everything I could get my hands on for display ideas. In the end, I was pleased. I looked very different from all the other booths. I received many positive comments and flagged the ever popular question, "Do you have a store?" or "Where is your store?" My response was always, "This is it for now, but I hope to have one some day."

*****

*****

Iwas tickled to have sold an architectural piece with my own custom finish. That was very cool! (It's the sunburst arch in the above pic.) I was also surprised to have sold so many plants. I had a few that were in old containers (like old oil cans or coffee pots) and also a few just wrapped in burlap. (NEW ENTRY: Since the posting of this entry originally, I am happy to report that I have also sold the cabinet and floor mirror, both of which are custom finished. The little chest sold at the show, but I can't take credit for that particular/very cool finish.)

*****

The Barbara Schriber cards were also very popular, as well as the Cathy Penton charms (from Australia), and the Bittersweet Designs small composition books. I will be restocking these items for my next show, as well as adding some new things.

*****

I will have original artwork by Patti Gainey, a very talented artist from Georgia; some beautiful jewelry from These Flowers, This Moon; and organic soap and soy candles from WoodSprite Organics and A Wild Soap Bar. I had a lot of requests for aprons, so I'll be working on getting some of those in also.

*****

It is my goal to have a few pieces of custom upholstery (actual reupholstery) that I have designed and possibly an example of custom bedcoverings. I really love textiles and love to mix beautiful fabrics for a one-of-a-kind result. Of course, there will be plenty of "new" old stuff. That is my favorite, after all!!

*****

On to what's next.....I was invited to have a booth at the Ft. Lauderdale Antique and Collector Faire. At first I didn't know what to think, but after discussing it with my hubby, we decided that "YES" would be the right answer. The dates are August 4 and 5 at the War Memorial Auditorium. More information on that will follow soon.

*****

Following that, I will be back in West Palm Beach in November for their first show of the season. That looks like it for this year, but if plans change, you'll be the first to know. I really want to thank all of you who came out to see my little show. Your kind words went right to my heart (and to my head in the form of ideas for next time). This is my first attempt at this blog stuff that appears to be so popular. I welcome your comments and will try to remember to update it in order to keep you posted on what is to come.

*****

Warm wishes. Sweet dreams,
